Fernández was one of three people who died in a boating crash early Sunday morning off the coast of Miami Beach. According to Lorenzo Veloz of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Fernandez was on a 32-foot boat that made a “severe impact” with a jetty. The gruesome scene was discovered by the U.S. Coast Guard when a patrol found their overturned vessel at roughly 3:30 a.m.

One of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, José Fernández of the Miami Marlins, has reportedly died in a boating accident in Miami Beach:

the 24-year-old Fernández already had an extensive resume in his very young career, making an All-Star game in both 2013 and 2016. Additionally, he won the 2013 Rookie of the Year award. This season Fernández was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA, and a ridiculous 253 strikeouts in 182.1 innings pitched. In his career he was 38-17, with a 2.58 ERA and had 589 K’s in 471.1 innings pitched.

Fernández defected from Cuba in 2008, and was drafted by Miami in 2011. He is survived by his pregnant girlfriend, about whom he wrote “I’m so glad you came into my life. I’m ready for where this journey is gonna take us together. #familyfirst” just five days ago on Instagram:
